How to hit a shot when a ball lies in a divot: To hit a solid shot from a divot it is mandatory to be in a good impact position. The hands must be ahead of the clubhead with the club traveling on a descending angle when contact is made.
A great drill to slow down your swing: A high percentage of golfers tend to swing too: fast thus causing them to be out of balance during the swing. If you think you fall into this category a great drill to not only slow your swing, but also help give you a smooth tempo is to place your feet together and practice hitting small shots with an 8 or 9 iron. This drill quiets the body motions and teaches you to swing with your arms. This feet together drill will quickly train you to make a slower and smoother swing.
How to hit a low shot into the wind (punch shot): To hit low driving shots which will fly through the wind, rather than a high trajectory shot which may fall victim to the wind it is important to be in the proper set-up position. To execute this shot properly it begins at address. Position your feet a little closer together with the weight favoring your front foot. You want to position your hands ahead of the clubhead. Position the grip end of the club so it is pointed at your left thigh. This set-up position will allow the club to get up in the air quickly on the backswing which will make it much easier to hit the ball first at impact. Keep a short follow through.
How to stop hitting fat shots:
A common reason so many golfers hit their golf shots fat, meaning the golf club hits the ground behind the golf ball and the ball flies a short distance, is because their left arm, at the top of the backswing, is bent severely. When this fault takes place it causes the clubhead to come into the ball at too steep of an angle.
To correct this problem, swing the club to the top and check your position. You would like to have your left arm fairly straight and pointing down your target line. Being in this position will make it much easier to come into the ball and not worry about hitting the ball fat.
The lob shot:
To execute the lob shot properly, set up to the golf ball with the ball forward in your stance and keep your hands and arms relaxed. To begin the swing, cock your wrists and keep your lower body movements to a minimum. On the downswing allow your wrists to uncock. Your goal is to slide the clubhead underneath the ball. To complete the shot, make a full finish and watch the ball fly high and land softly on the green.
Tee it high and watch it fly:
Anytime I see a golfer tee the ball low to the ground I know they are not a great driver of the golf ball. However, if I see someone tee it high I know that there is a high probability they hit their drivers well. With the ball teed up high it requires the club to be traveling up through the ball. The golfers who tee the ball low are afraid of skying the ball.
Load up on your right side for maximum power: To hit the ball with power, your body must move in the correct sequence. The correct sequence is to transfer the weight to your back leg on the backswing. Then when you begin the downswing, transfer the weight to the outside of your forward foot. Learning how to transfer your weight correctly during the swing will maximize your power.
Develop a powerful swing:
A great drill which will stretch and strengthen your muscles and allow you to -hit the ball powerfully is to practice swinging a broom. Swinging a broom creates resistance which in turn stretches and strengthens your golf muscles, thus creating a powerful swing.
